It is generally pretty off-putting to hear performers that you know have a certain persona do something that you believe is out of character. I experienced this listening to Lucille Ball in “Dime a Dance” on Suspense. The Jack Benny Suspense episode I listened to (“Murder in G-Flat”), wasn’t as bad – he still sounded like Jack Benny and he still played the violin. Knowing Jimmy Stewart primarily from his films with Frank Capra (mainly “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”), hearing him in the Suspense episode “Mission Completed” helped give me a different appreciation of… Read more »

Some are just super recognizable, like Jimmy Stewart. I am accustomed to his pre-WWII persona and hearing him on “The Six Shooter,” which is basically still him. Lucy, of course, everyone knows from “I Love Lucy,” and OTR-wise I had really only heard in the radio pilot for “I Love Lucy” before “Suspense.” With the OTR stars like Jack Benny, they had a radio persona they built (and often carried over to TV and film). Somehow I missed this one when it first came out. Listened with a friend yesterday and we both loved it! I’ll have to check out some of Ball’s other Suspense appearances now…
