Some are just super recognizable, like Jimmy Stewart. I am accustomed to his pre-WWII persona and hearing him on "The Six Shooter," which is basically still him. Lucy, of course, everyone knows from "I Love Lucy," and OTR-wise I had really only heard in the radio pilot for "I Love Lucy" before "Suspense."

With the OTR stars like Jack Benny, they had a radio persona they built (and often carried over to TV and film). Even when Benny, Burns & Allen, Abbott & Costello and the like guest-starred on other programs, they often played themselves in those personalities, so separating the voice from that character is difficult.

That also goes for non-OTR stuff as well. When the MORLS podcast began, I had listened to "Shade's Brigade" so many times that it took a while to hear Eric as Eric and not as Jack Shade talking about OTR.

Interesting! I find it easier to forget a famous persona when I'm not seeing the corresponding actor, but I get how it might be easier to do if you can see a character presented that is clearly different than the performer's "typical" appearance. Or it may just be challenging to ignore an iconic personality no matter what the circumstances.

It is generally pretty off-putting to hear performers that you know have a certain persona do something that you believe is out of character. I experienced this listening to Lucille Ball in "Dime a Dance" on Suspense. The Jack Benny Suspense episode I listened to ("Murder in G-Flat"), wasn't as bad - he still sounded like Jack Benny and he still played the violin. Knowing Jimmy Stewart primarily from his films with Frank Capra (mainly "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington"), hearing him in the Suspense episode "Mission Completed" helped give me a different appreciation of Mr. Stewart's talents.
