This was a good show, up until the ending—-which didn’t make any sense at all. The guy sees that thing killed his co-worker, then he takes it home and hooks up with it? Come on–that was so stupid. That wasn’t even really explained, either. Other than, it was entertainingly creepy.

Jesus Fourble Christ!! What a fantastic episode. Grew up in oil industry, so some of this was familiar, but this is just so perfectly written and acted, that it doesn’t matter. Had totally forgotten about poor, deaf Mike until you look up, and he’s got a gun on you.

I was looking forward to this episode just because “The Thing on the Fourble Board” is such a great show, but you guys really knocked it out of the park with your insightful commentary. Your analysis really enhanced this listener’s understanding of (and appreciation for) the radio show.

I’ve been thinking about his explanations of oil stuff. You discussed them on the show. But observe. It was not THIS:
“So then we put on the thevenin belt. The thevenin belt is used to make the drill bit tungsten-resistent.”

Instead it was THIS:
“So then we put on the thevenin belt.” perfect pause. “Oh. The thevenin belt is used to make the drill bit tungsten-resistent.” And the timing of the voice acting was subtle and perfect. “So then we put on the thevenin belt.” and the pause is just long enough for him to notice that you’ve stopped following -that you’ve gotten confused. And that is what the “Oh” does. (Or whatever the sound he makes – maybe more silence). But there is this distinct Use A Term – Notice the Listener didn’t get it – Explain.

The result is that it isn’t just a narrator narrating a story anymore. I, the listener, am now a character. Because the narrator is looking at me, and observing my reactions to what he was saying. The explanations usually came right when I WAS needing one.

So at the end, it was even creepier, because it wasn’t a narrator threatening in general – it was me. I was in the room. It was me.

AND then when I relistened to the first part, I noticed the tone when he said, “Sit down” was more of a command than an invite.

I really liked this episode.

As a relative newbie to the genre, this is one of the better episodes you’ve done. Although, I thought Mike was the listener, not the Thing. And I had to look up what a fourble board is, because I missed that part. Also they say fourble board way too much.
