In reply to Patrickm. Yeah, not one of Oboler's most sympathetic protagonists. Arch did not take kindly to Americans who turned their back on the war. I think that's why he went out of his way to make the couple in this story so loathsome and their deaths so horrific.

I wonder how much research Oboler (or the foley artist) did into earthworm anatomy before recording this. Because earthworms have little bristles that help them propel themselves through the earth. You can feel the bristles if you let a worm crawl around on the palm of your hand.

Those bristles could help account for the scraping sounds on the part of the giant, revolting earthworms.
