That is a beautiful story and makes me kick myself for not reading my own daughter Peter Lorre bedtime stories. Frog and Toad are a perfect match for Peter Lorre. Shel Silverstein would be great too. I can imagine him losing his freaking mind reading “Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take The Garbage Out”.

And she was at her grandma’s and got a toy telephone built into a horse. Grandma buys at garage sales. And daughter wanted to call me on the phone, so I said OK, and she called and said “Hi Daddy!” and I decided it would be a wrong number so I said, “I am not your FAAHHTHer. Thees is PEEETer LORre!” And she said, “Hi, Peter Lorre! My name is” and they had this conversation.

After that, Peter Lorre became one of her favorite character-friends of hers, maybe in the top two. Once she asked if I would be hurt if instead of reading her a bedtime story, I could ask Peter Lorre to read to her. He read “Frog and Toad are friends” and kept asking her questions about why they didn’t just use violence to solve their various problems. “Will the snake come back and KEEEL THEM?” “Oh no, Peter Lorre, he doesn’t appear again in the story.” “But what about CHEKOV’S GUN?” “I don’t know about that, Peter Lorre! There’s no gun in the story! Keep reading!”

For years, Peter Lorre was part of our lives. She’s older now. I miss him.
