Two major points here: 1) your overall dislike of the story was warranted for many reasons but the bashing expressed in your discussion was too ham-fisted to duly honour the aspects that worked. It was good to hear Joshua mention the surreal nature of the lack of character-driven reactions that Eric doesn't like. The description of the horrible sea woman that was dreamt of was delightfully creepy and other-worldly. Ramping up criticism can diminish appreciation. 2) to measure any work on whether it "stands the test of time" can fail to appreciate the qualities and value old stories have that speak to the eras they came from. I presume you seek universal value in the stories as an english teacher looks for timeless values in Shakespeare, but sometimes your "test of time" judgements reads as reductionary as "once good/now bad". Many things in OTR horror/strangeness have qualities that worked then but don't work now and that's not always a bad thing. To me it often provides much of the appeal of something old, like the relics buried in old cities that have been built overtop of, when they are discovered and examined they speak volumes to the era they're from and have great value.

I was one of the people who voted for this one, so: You're welcome. — No, actually, I'm so sorry. [Insert David Tennant GIF here.]

I was looking forward to this, because I was hoping for something as hilariously awful as "Spawn of the Sub-Human" and "The Demon Tree." Instead, this one was just really, really poor.

That was pretty awful. Colleen and I were pulling for The Mysterious Traveler but at least with this one I got to hear Tim allude to my favorite HPL story, “The Whisperer In Darkness.”
