Take that!

One point you didn’t comment on regarding [SPOILER WARNING] the cleaving of the cat: My impression is that what triggers the narrator (whether the narrator of Stoker’s story or Price in this adaptation) into impulsively killing the cat is not simply a desire for punishment, but the horror that the cat is sitting on its victim, licking the blood pouring from his eye sockets. I’m not as against this killing of the cat as you were (in this work of fiction — let me hasten to add that I don’t think it’s acceptable to walk around with a sword saying “Here, kitty, kitty, kitty”), but I agree with Joshua that it doesn’t work as well here with Vincent Price being the one who does this, compared to Stoker’s story.
