ACD brings in the phrenology stuff because he was a big believer in that. He totally bought into the whole, black people have smaller craniums, therefore are mentally inferior BS. He wasn’t a product of his time, he just held morally repugnant views.

This is him telling the public he wasn’t going to do more Sherlock Holmes. It isn’t really a story, no mystery, no heart, no emotion. Holmes follows typical English virtues and he doesn’t sacrifice his friendship with Watson, instead he saves him. Watson is the stand in for the English empire, the every man who is virtuous by being English. Holmes sacrifices himself to save the English empire.
