The reason the guys can laugh at this is because it is something they don’t worry about.

This wasn’t kink code, this wasn’t consensual, this is re-enforcing that women can be physically beaten by men, in order to control them and society was fine with it (read, the men in society).

Looking at how prevalent domestic violence was back then, this is a joke in the whole “it funny because it’s true” way.
