This was highly entertaining. The only thing that keeps me from ranking it a classic is that the final twist didn't seem like enough of a twist. [SPOILER WARNING to others: Don't read the rest of this comment if you haven't listened to the episode!] The wedding ring in the wreckage of the fire was presented as if it implied that maybe there were real people there after all, even though there weren't any corpses. But a ring isn't that hard to come by. The natural assumption for the cop to make should have been that Tony had put the ring on one of the wax statues. The was no reason for the cop to act like he wasn't sure what really happened.

Regarding your discussion over whether the stranger's losing his face was supposed to be an allusion to anything: My take was that it was intended to suggest that Tony's father might have been the one who cut off his face. When Tina asks Tony why he chose his occupation, he says "Maybe it's because my name is Murillo", and tells her about his father, Cesar Murillo, who shot nine men before a sheriff's posse shot him. A "sheriff's posse" suggests that this occurred in the west, and in combination with a Hispanic surname, that suggests the southwest. Then when the stranger stops Tony in the street, he asks Tony if he's Tony Murillo. And then a bit later, he says that his face was destroyed by a bandit in desert country — and "desert country" could also mean the U.S. southwest. So at that point, I was expecting it to be some kind of revenge scheme against Tony because of the crimes of his father. And when he asked Tony to sculpt Tony's own face for him, I was expecting him to commit some crime wearing Tony's face, and frame Tony. But, of course, this being Inner Sanctum, the plot instead went in about thirteen other directions.

Mason Adams also played the Atom Man, a Nazi villain, in possibly the greatest storyline of The Adventures of Superman radio series.

And I slightly surprised that, in your discussion of "The Lost Chord", you didn't mention the Moody Blues album In Search of the Lost Chord. (Not that I've ever actually listened to the album; I'm just aware of its existence. I listened to Days of Future Passed all the way through once, and that was more than enough for me.)
