In reply to Johnathan Monsen. That would be a great twist, but so many reasons it is a trope, least of which is to play into fears about "headshrinkers". It is almost funny. People fear mental health professionals, so pop culture plays into that and makes them "scary".

One of these days, I want somebody to pull this “have someone committed so nobody believes them” trick, and the psychiatrist immediately calls the police because they KNOW A SANE PERSON FROM A DELUSIONAL ONE, DANG IT! Somebody that actually knows how to do their job instead of going off the pop culture understanding of insanity.
