I thought this was great, until the ending, which was a bit disappointing — not the revelation of the villain’s actual plan, which was a great twist, but because the revelation took place early enough, and the discussion of the twist went on for so long, that it felt like there ought to have been another twist coming — maybe that Lönnrot had informed his colleague’s of his destination, and he was stalling for time until reinforcements showed up, or else maybe that the final murder really did unleash some kind of horrifying cosmic event. This and The Dark Tower were the two recent ones that I listened to a second time after it ended. I love how if you just objectively look at it – the detective is obviously a complete idiot the whole time, but the first time around we are so genre trained that we are with him. So the joke is not just on the detective, but on we the genre savvy know it all listeners.
This one was interesting, but it felt more like sloppy writing than intentional layering. If the two are really in a loop, it should have been hinted at or spelled out more.
