Another listener sent us note on this topic, arguing that “100 years in a dark, Radon-laden cavern with only fish to eat and inbreeding of the families…could exaggerate any conditions that may have existed in that small genetic pool.” The note also mentioned the possible effects Reynauds syndrome, fish borne diseases, scleroderma, vitamin deficiency, and shortened reproductive cycles, as well as the potential of the cave dwellers actively suppressing spoken language to survive. I enjoyed this a lot, but one thing that didn’t quite work for me was the scream at the end. Something about it just seemed “off.” I don’t know if the timing wasn’t quite right, or if it wasn’t loud enough, or what, but it just didn’t seem real to me, and detracted from the climax of the story. I LOVED THIS! Halfway through, I was like “ohhhhh, the writers of the excellent horror film The Descent were CLEARLY mysterious traveler fans, and now I want to watch The Descent again. 🙂
