Columbia Workshop presents Lucille Fletcher’s adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu’s novella “Carmilla”! A father takes in a young abandoned girl who befriends his daughter, but soon discovers that Carmilla is much more than she seems. Will a parent’s desire to make his child happy prove to be his family’s undoing? Could he possibly have known what evil lurked in Carmilla’s heart? This was great! I’ve liked Le Fanu’s Carmilla since I first read it when I was around 12 or so, but I wasn’t sure how well it would translate to radio — and it translated a lot better than I expected. This adaptation probably works better as an audio drama than a more faithful one would have. (But I was shocked to hear that not one of you has read Le Fanu’s original. You guys might want to check out two of Fletcher’s other WORKSHOP scripts, “Someone Else” and “Remodeled Brownstone,” both of which are similar to her later work for the SUSPENSE series.

Late to the party here, but the bird you were thinking of was probably the cuckoo or the cowbird. Carmilla the Cowbird does have a ring to it…
