Throughout November we will be saying thank you to our listeners! This week we are joined by Chip, a Patreon supporter at the highest tier.  Chip has invited us to listen to an episode of The Shadow entitled “The Face!” A famous actor suffers a disfiguring accident that drives him to kill. Will the Shadow be able to put an end to his crimes? What will it take to make the Shadow afraid? Do you have the same dark, grisly taste in radio as Chip? Listen for yourself and find out! Then vote and let us know what you think!

I was in a theater group that did live performances of golden age radio shows, and “The Face” was a script we used on several occasions, despite the dark tone. A fondly-remembered old-time radio character in an episode with opportunities for entertaining sound effects and dramatic music. For the mirrors at the end, our sound engineer created a wood & wire mesh box and put pieces of glass inside, and threw objects into the box. I played Lamont Cranston/The Shadow a couple of times and directed one of the performances. It’s a pretty great entrance for The Shadow, breaking glass… Read more »

That sounds like a blast. I would love to perform this one live. We’ll have to put it on the list for next year’s James J. Hill shows.

I love this episode of the Shadow and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the discussion afterwards. There’s a lot of depth to this one that I don’t think I ever picked up on before. Glad you enjoyed the discussion and thank you for the recommendation! I’ve added Frankenstein to our listener list. We’ll definitely feature it on a future episode. I’ve never heard of Favorite Story, but the concept sounds similar to Murder By Experts. I look forward to hearing it!

In that version, which ran in the Batman Sunday page from June 23 through August 18, 1946, Two-Face is not District Attorney Harvey Dent, but handsome actor Harvey Apollo, whose vanity about his looks contributes to his… Read more »

I never knew that bit of Two-Face trivia! I think “The Face” is from 1947 so this might be the first and only time The Shadow ripped off Batman instead of the other way around!
