This week, our visit to the Listener Library brings us an episode of Lights Out, “Come to the Bank,” recommended to us by our Mysterious Listener Kristaps! Thanks, Kristaps! In this Arch Oboler story, a desperate woman pleads with the listener to accompany her to the bank. She has an improbable tale about a man who believes the power of concentration and will can accomplish supernatural feats. Could this man manifest the abilities he claimed? What happened at the bank to make this woman so distraught? Is this story flawed because it is a typical Arch Oboler story or is that what makes it awesome? Listen for yourself and find out! Then vote and let us know what you think!

Does “Come to the Bank” stand the test of time?

I am NOT a fan of this episode. Man talks down to and takes advantage of a smart woman who is a social outcast because of her brains (Unmarried Female High School Physics Teacher-Nerd). The desperate nerd woman who goes crazy when she doesn’t get the man of her attention trope is really hurtful in this current social and political climate. B) He shows… Read more »

Fair points. I agree with ending A, the idea that she either uncovers the bones with the axe, or C they do a quick bit at the end where some people (police, doctors, construction workers), have a discussion about the discovery of the bones. That would let them keep her ending monologue, which I found really powerful. It feels like it’s a commentary on the people who won’t listen to women because of their gender.

Gotta side with Eric again. This script did not stand out to me, as an AO script. The man in the wall was just great. Creepy, suspenseful, horrific. Great ending too. 4 out 4.
